History Of The Belgian Warmblood Horse

Until 1954 it was forbidden to breed saddle horses in Belgium and horse breeders efforts concentrated on breeding Belgium's Draft Horse. After the ban was lifted breeders worked towards developing a riding horse and the Belgian Warmblood horse was developed through selective breeding of the finest calvary and light agricultural horses of Belgium with Thoroughbreds, Anglo-Arabs, Holsteiners, Hanoverians, Selle Francais and the Dutch Warmblood.

The Belgisch Warmbloed Paard (BWP) was founded in 1955 and a studbook set up for Belgian Warmblood horses. Belgian Warmbloods are not characterised by pedigree or appearance but by their suitability for a purpose - jumping. In order for a horse to be licensed as a true Belgian Warmblood it has to undergo a rigorous inspection by “Hengstenkeuring” that includes detailed veterinary examination, evaluation of conformation and its jumping ability.
