History Of The Friesian Horse
The Friesian horse is one of the oldest European breeds native to the Netherlands and was originally used as a calvary horse. During the 17th Century Friesian horses could also be found in classical and high school riding academies. Friesian horses were also used as carriage horses and in the 18th and 19th Centuries Friesian horses were used in trotting races.
In 1879 the Friesian Horse Studbook of the Netherlands was established and in Victorian times Friesian horses were used as carriage horses including funeral carriage horses. However, the popularity of the Friesian horse declined and by the beginning of World War I the Friesian horse was in danger of extinction. Revival of the breed began during World War II when there was a shortage of vehicles and later with an improving economy the Friesian horse was used for leisure activities with Friesian horses competing at top international level driving competitions, being used for dressage and within circuses.
The Friesian horse has been used in the development of other horse breeds including the Fell Pony and Dales Pony.

The Friesian horse has a long head with short ears on a crested neck with a luxurious mane. The body is strong and well muscled, the tail thick and the legs feathered. The Friesian horse has a fast high stepping trot.
