Home of Rest for Horses Celebrates 40 years of Charitable Giving

The Home of Rest for Horses in Buckinghamshire is celebrating 40 years of charitable giving. Since 1965 it has given more than £17 million for research into equine welfare at various universities and veterinary schools in the UK.

Following discussion at the 1965 annual meeting, Chairman Colonel G H Critchley presented three major projects for consideration. Decisions were made and £5,000 was given to build an Equine hospital wing and to fund orthopaedic instruments at The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket; The Royal Veterinary College Field Station was given the same amount to provide a new range of stables where impoverished owners could send their animals for treatment and an annual grant of £2,500 was awarded to the British Horse Society to further the activities of its Riding Establishments Advisory Association.

In the past 40 years The Home has funded scientific projects and research into the many ailments and illnesses that afflict horses, ponies and donkeys. The Home has invested many millions of pounds into scientific projects, clinical training scholarships, clinical facilities and equipment and clinical awards.

"We are very proud to contribute so much money to the welfare of equines worldwide," said the current Chairman, Sir Simon Cooper.

Since its formation in 1886 The Home has also provided sanctuary for horses, ponies and donkeys at its headquarters in Speen, Buckinghamshire.
